When you were trying to open a folder or to cut/delete something in your USB drive or memory card on computer, have you ever encountered the pop-out window that says,”This disk is write-protected. Remove the write protection or get a new disk.”? Well, write protection is a common error occurs mostly due to immediate unplugging of the drive or memory card when the transfer is done or half-done. Though in some of the case it was caused by left the write protection switch on. Then how to fix this? How to remove the write protection? Here I provide some methods that might be helpful, read on.

Method 1. Remove Write Protection by Checking your Lock Switch.

Some USB drives or memory cards have the write protection switch now, which protects the drive from being formatted or written. In some cases, the reason why we encounter the write protection error is that we left the switch on the lock  position. So when the error pops up, just unplug the USB drive or memory card and check if it is locked. (There are other USB drive brands that are well-received, like HP USB drive. )

sd card write protectionIf it is indeed locked, switch it to the unlock position, then the write protection should be removed.  however, if your USB drive or memory card doesn’t have the lock switch or the error remains with the switch is off, it could have been the problem with the file system. Try the following method to remove the protection.

Method 2. Remove Write Protection by Modifying Registry Key

Hey, don’t be intimidated by the phrase “registry key”, it’s not as difficult as it sounds. Just follow the steps below, you will find removing write protection is pretty easy.

1. Press Windows+R to open run.exe, then type “regedit” to open Registry Editor.

2. Navigate to the following path:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\StorageDevicePolicies

3. Double click the WriteProtect, change the value from 1 to 0, and save the change.

change writeprotect

4. Close registry editor and reboot your PC, then your write-protected USB drive or memory card should be ready.

What If There is NO StorageDevicePolicies?

Some of you may find that there is no StorageDevicePolicies under the Control, then what to do? Then answer is simple, if there is no such a value, create one then.

1. Under the Control folder,  right click the white space, hit New->Key, and name the folder “StorageDevicePolicies”.

01

2. Double click to enter the new folder, then right click on the white space, hit New-> DWORD, name it “WriteProtect”.

3. Set the value data to 0, save the change and reboot your computer.

By this step, the write protection should be removed, if not. Let’s activate the great tool Command Prompt to kill it.

Method 3. Remove Write Protection By Using Command Prompt

The command we are using in this method is diskpart, some of you may think that command prompt is way to difficult, no worries, here is a clear and detailed guide for you.

1. Once again, press Windows+R to open run.exe, then type “cmd” this time.

2. When the command prompt pops out, type “diskpart” and enter.

3. Then type “list disk” and enter.

4. When the list of your disks shows up, figure out which one is your USB drive or memory card by its capacity, and type “select disk x(x being the number of your drive)”.

5. Then type attribute disk clear readonly. When it’s done, then the write protection should be removed.

By now you should be able to cut and delete files on your USB drive. If still it’s not working, then there is no much thing we can do, it’s time to get a new USB drive or memory card.

Also, if your USB drive became writable and you accidentally deleted some files or formatted it, please use Card Data Recovery to recover the lost files.

Practical cases:

  1. When insert the memory card to digital camera, it pops up “memory card error” and you are unable to take or show photos any more.
  2. While transfer the photos to computer, The PC said it is unable to download anymore due to an error. When you put the card back into the camera, it says “memory card error” on a black screen and nothing else

Other common memory card error messages are “card error”, “the card can not be used”, “Read error/write error”, “can not initialized” etc.

How to solve the problem?

If you do have important data on the card, stop doing anything on your camera’s card (do not format the card or take any more photos), you have to undertake the photo recovery first. There are many tools can help you. For example: Card Data Recovery for Windows(for Windows Users) or Card Data Recovery for Mac(for Mac Users)

Connect the digital camera to PC to see whether it can be detected by PC with drive letter or not. If it is, use the photo recovery software to scan your memory card and get back the valuable data. If not, take out the memory card and connect it to PC with a card reader and then use the program to scan the memory card and retrieve data. After getting back the precious data, you can format the memory card according your camera manual. If the card can’t be formatted, try other available memory card in your hand to see whether it has the same scenario. If the card does not display a “memory card error”, then the precious one is at fault. And you may have to buy other new card.

If the data in the memory card is not vital for you, you can directly format it as the above stated.

Note: You had better replace the frequently and long-time used memory cards with new ones for all typical memory cards have a finite lifespan, approximately 10,000 write/erase operations.

The older ones are easier to get error. You had better buy new ones if the card was used for a long time or frequently erased.
