Remove the write protection or get a new disk.”? Well, write protection is a common error occurs mostly due to immediate unplugging of the drive or memory card when the transfer is done or half-done. Though in some of the case it was caused by left the write protection switch on. Then how to fix this? How to remove the write protection? Here I provide some methods that might be helpful, read on.

Method 1. Remove Write Protection by Checking your Lock Switch.

Some USB drives or memory cards have the write protection switch now, which protects the drive from being formatted or written. In some cases, the reason why we encounter the write protection error is that we left the switch on the lock  position. So when the error pops up, just unplug the USB drive or memory card and check if it is locked. (There are other USB drive brands that are well-received, like HP USB drive. )

Try the following method to remove the protection.

Method 2. Remove Write Protection by Modifying Registry Key

Hey, don’t be intimidated by the phrase “registry key”, it’s not as difficult as it sounds. Just follow the steps below, you will find removing write protection is pretty easy.

1. Press Windows+R to open run.exe, then type “regedit” to open Registry Editor.

What If There is NO StorageDevicePolicies?

Some of you may find that there is no StorageDevicePolicies under the Control, then what to do? Then answer is simple, if there is no such a value, create one then.

1. Under the Control folder,  right click the white space, hit New->Key, and name the folder “StorageDevicePolicies”.


2. Double click to enter the new folder, then right click on the white space, hit New-> DWORD, name it “WriteProtect”.

3. Set the value data to 0, save the change and reboot your computer.

Method 3. Remove Write Protection By Using Command Prompt

The command we are using in this method is diskpart, some of you may think that command prompt is way to difficult, no worries, here is a clear and detailed guide for you.

1. Once again, press Windows+R to open run.exe, then type “cmd” this time.

2. When the command prompt pops out, type “diskpart” and enter.

3. Then type “list disk” and enter.

4. When the list of your disks shows up, figure out which one is your USB drive or memory card by its capacity, and type “select disk x(x being the number of your drive)”.

5. Then type attribute disk clear readonly. When it’s done, then the write protection should be removed.
